Blog 5: archive

With about 1.5 million followers, including some notable celebrities, one of my favorite digital archives is an instagram account called VelvetCoke. The main purpose of the account is to highlight various aspects of pop-culture in different time periods such as fashion, photography, cinema, sports, and celebrity moments. I consider the account to be an archive because it has a collection of over 2,000 posts about various aspects of visual culture that span across several different decades, and because the creator rarely ever posts anything from the current year. I follow the account because I personally enjoy learning about pop-culture more when it's in the context of the past, compared to the pop-culture of 'my generation.' Particularly right now I'm interested in fashion and supermodel culture of the 1990's, so following an archival account such as VelvetCoke is great for that. I interact with the account by saving photos that I'd like to use as inspiration for my own art tastes, including fashion, makeup styles, and even interior design.

Blog 6: brainstorm

Project ideas  Archival performance: create a video that captures the different understandings of femininity that women and non-binary people in my life have taken on and grown out of at various points in their life. The idea is to showcase a series of maybe 5-7 different people's individual archives of femininity from their early-coming of age years until the present day. What I mean by archives of femininity is the ways in which people have understood, expressed, and performed their femininity over the course of several years (the earliest they can remember until now.) I'm picturing a 5-6 minute video that compiles a flash series of short videos/pictures of people acting out the different understandings and expressions of femininity they've gone through in order to show that femininity and womanhood aren't synonymous and that femininity can mean different things for different people at different times. Blog 2: Patti Pace Festival

     I think the Patti Pace festival was a really incredible way to showcase the use of performance as a way to protest and push for social justice. Upon centering around topics of racial discrimination, white supremacy, identity politics, and the historical social events that have gained immense traction since the summer of 2020, it was great that the festival showcased the perspectives and artistry of people who have true lived experience with the topics discussed.  I especially liked Javan Johnson's poetry from his publication 'Ain't Never Not Been Black,' and I actually went on to purchase this book because I wanted to read more from him. I was really moved by his poem called 'America,' in which Johnson writes about the history of Black people, but powerfully replaces the words 'Black people' with the word 'America' throughout the entire poem.
